The cooperative advantage

Dating back to 1844, the cooperative business model allows for the democratic ownership of the company by its members. Who are these members?

  • You and me. Anyone can apply to become a member-owner of Jackson Farmers.
  • To become a member, an application for membership needs to be completed along with purchasing at least one share of stock ($10 par value). The bylaws allow for up to 50 shares to be held per account. One member = one vote.
  • Members are eligible for patronage to be paid following profitable years.

Types of membership

  • Voting Membership
  • Must be a "bona fide producer of agricultural products"
  • Actively engaged in farming (row crop or livestock)
  • Actively patronizing the coop
  • "Hobby farming" does not qualify
  • Participating Membership (Non-voting)
  • Do not need to be a "bona fide producer of agricultural products"
  • Still eligible for patronage benefits

Any new patrons considering becoming members are encouraged to become voting members if they meet the qualifications. If you know of a member who qualifies for voting membership but is not currently, they can request to become voting members by filling out a membership application at any time. By being able to actively participate in elections and other votes they are able to make their voice heard. Active members in a cooperative can also qualify for other benefits such as the Land O'Lakes fleet discount on qualifying new vehicle purchases.
